BRC says pro-federation leader’s arrest an attempt to turn him into a hero

KARACHI: The arrest of the Jamhoori Watan Party’s (JWP) pro-federation chief, Shahzain Bugti, one of the grandsons of Akbar Khan Bugti, is an attempt to make him into a hero, because he and his party have no support among the people of Balochistan, according to Baloch Rights Council (BRC) Chairperson Abdul Wahab Baloch.

Bugti was arrested at 4 a.m. Wednesday at the Buleli checkpost near Quetta for alleged arms trafficking while on his way back from Chaman after offering Fateha for a Pakhtun leader, Jeelani Khan Achakzai.

“Everyone knows that arms are being smuggled – it has been going on for quite a while. They decided to stage this entire arrest drama now because the JWP has realised that it has no support in Balochistan. People, meanwhile, have realised that their politics is a farce, and so is this arrest,” Wahab Baloch told Pakistan Today. “When genuine Baloch activists are arrested, only their mutilated bodies are returned to their families. People such as Shahzain Bugti, on the other hand, get arrested, create a scene, and are then released in a couple of days. All charges against them are dropped miraculously.”

The BRC chief’s sentiments were echoed by other Baloch groups in Karachi, including a faction of the Baloch Students’ Organisation (BSO), whose chief, Jawad Baloch said that they will not be holding any protests for Bugti’s release. “There has been no reaction regarding this from Baloch people in Karachi. Everyone knows that the JWP is ‘naam-nehad’ and does not work for the people of Balochistan. They have some token support in some areas of Balochistan; they use tribalism for politics, and as such, even the reaction to this arrest will be in tribal pockets. You will find no political reaction from the people.”
