Karachi to get pro-MQM DCO?

Karachi to get pro-MQM DCO?

By Urooj Zia (Pakistan Today; 01 January 2011)

KARACHI: Muhammad Hussain Syed, a former Hyderabad district coordination officer (DCO), might be appointed as the Karachi DCO soon. The move, however, is yet to be made official; the notification in this regard has not been issued yet by the Sindh Information Department.

Syed is said to be close to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and is a close friend of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan. He was recommended for the post of Karachi DCO by the MQM, and as such, rumours of his appointment might be part of the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) move to placate the MQM after the recent rift, sources told Pakistan Today. Syed is a bureaucrat and a businessperson who used to manage a perfume shop. He has also served as the DCO Hyderabad, and was part of the Sindh health department in the past. He was married, at one point, to a daughter of Prof. Ghafoor Ahmed of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Contrary to reports circulating in a section of the media, however, the new DCO will not replace Administrator Fazalur Rehman. The latter had been holding the dual offices of Karachi administrator and DCO because the post for DCO had been lying vacant. If and when a new DCO is appointed, Rehman will continue to hold the office of Karachi administrator.
