Sultan Masjid khateeb declares Sherry Rehman ‘kafir’, ‘wajibul qatl

  • Citizens to lodge FIR against cleric under Anti-Terrorism Act

KARACHI:  In a repeat of the incidents which preceded the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, the khateeb of Sultan Masjid in DHA Phase-2 declared former federal information minister Sherry Rehman a kafir on Saturday, and issued a fatwa against her, labelling her ‘wajibul qatl’ for tabling a bill for amendments in the Blasphemy Laws.

His actions, however, were widely condemned by quarters concerned, which have decided to lodge an FIR against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Moreover, a protest is also being planned near the mosque against the clerics uncalled for and unlawful remarks.

The cleric, meanwhile, is being supported by religio-political parties and organisations, with many, such as the Tehrik-e-Islami, naming Rehman openly in flyers distributed to mobilise people for an anti-amendments rally on Sunday. In these flyers, which have been in circulation around mosques and at major traffic signals for the past few days, religio-political organisations and parties have claimed that by tabling her bill, Rehman has ‘challenged the sentiments of the Muslims of Pakistan’, and as such issue thinly-veiled threats against her. Little, meanwhile, has been done by officials concerned to beef up security for Rehman, with Interior Minister Rehman Malik even ‘advising’ her to flee the country to save her life.

This is strange so strange that the Interior Minister advises Sherry Rehman to flee the country to save her life.Do I take it as the complete breakdown of law and order in Pakistan. Regardless what she did was right or wrong, it is not up to the people to cause any harm to her or threaten her. Everything should be resolved through dialogue, dialogue and dialogue only – that is the mark of maturity of a nation.

There is need to have a thorough look at the Blasphemy law and plug in all those loopholes that give opportunities to the mischief mongers to abuse and misuse the law. It so unfortunate that neither the President nor the Prime Minister has spine to make a clear cut decision on the issue
